As an herbalist, aromatherapist, and permaculture practitioner, I sometimes feel like we’re expected to be the ultimate embodiment of calm, balanced, dreamy natural health people—always grounded, always centered, always living in perfect harmony with work, life, and self-care. But the reality? Almost every herbalist and aromatherapist I know, myself included, takes on more than we should. We juggle our love of plants, our work, our communities, our families, our homes—always trying to balance serving others while still earning a living and maintaining some sense of personal well-being.

And let’s be honest: holistic practitioners are often the worst at following their own advice. How many of us talk about stress relief while running on fumes? How many of us advocate for rest while burning the candle at both ends? I cannot tell you how many times I have asked a frazzled, tired herbalist if they are ok on the adaptogens - and they admit they are not using herbs. Too busy. Nobody is perfect. But the real work is in acknowledging where we struggle and trying, every day, to live in alignment with the values we teach.
